The Carnarvon Sobering Up Centre is a free service that provides a safe, care oriented environment, in which people found intoxicated in public may sober up.

A person being cared for in a Sobering Up Centre can expect:

  • Access to bathroom facilities, a shower, bed, clean clothes, and a simple nutritious meal
  • Non-discriminatory and non-judgemental care
  • Referral to other agencies and services if required.

People may refer themselves to the centre or be brought in by the police, a local patrol, health/welfare agencies, or other means. Attendance at a centre is voluntary.

This service aims to divert individuals from the police lockup and reduce the likelihood of them causing further harm to themselves or others in the community.


Referrals/Assessment & Admission

Clients may be brought into the centre by the Police, local patrols, health and welfare agencies or by other means including self referral.

For a client to be admitted they must be assessed by centre staff and meet the following criteria;

  • Intoxicated ( alcohol or other substances)
  • Fully conscious and free of injuries
  • Not aggressive, abusive or currently banned from the centre
  • Voluntarily willing to enter the centre
  • Not be in possession of any weapons, alcohol or other drugs
  • Must be 18 years or over.


Hours of Operation

The Carnarvon Sobering Up Centre is open from 4pm on Wednesdays to Saturdays and no admission is granted after 2am. To find out more, please contact:
